The insurance calendar in Florida.

Enrollment windows open and close on fixed dates, and storms do not wait. These are the dates and deadlines that affect coverage for Hillsborough County households.

Through the year

Dates on the calendar.

  1. January 1 to March 31

    Medicare Advantage open enrollment

People already in a Medicare Advantage plan can switch plans once. This window is only for people who start the year in a Medicare Advantage plan. In Florida, moving to a Medicare Supplement usually requires health underwriting.

  2. June 1 to November 30

    Atlantic hurricane season

Insurers stop writing new policies once a watch or warning covers any part of Florida. Review your hurricane deductible and buy flood coverage before the season. Federal flood policies normally start 30 days after purchase.

    Home insurance
  3. September

    Medicare Annual Notice of Change

Your plan mails next year's changes to premiums, copays and benefits. Read it before the enrollment period opens. Check your doctors and prescriptions against the changes.

  4. October 15 to December 7

    Medicare annual enrollment

Review or change a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for January 1. Plans change their benefits and networks every year, so a plan that fit this year may not fit next year.

  5. November 1 to January 15

    Health plan open enrollment

Enroll by December 15 for Marketplace coverage that starts January 1. Outside this window you need a qualifying event, such as losing other coverage, to enroll within 60 days.

  6. January 1, 2027

    Citizens flood requirement

Every Citizens home policy with wind coverage must carry flood insurance. The rule applies whatever the home's value. Condo unit policies are exempt. Allow for the 30-day wait on a federal flood policy.
