Medicare help in Brandon, FL

Medicare is federal health coverage from age 65, or earlier after two years on disability benefits. It leaves gaps, and private plans fill them. The first choice you make is the hardest to change later in Florida, so it is worth understanding before you enroll.

What it covers

What Medicare includes.

  • Part A

Hospital stays, skilled nursing and hospice. Most people pay no premium for it.

  • Part B

Doctors, outpatient care and preventive services. The standard premium is $202.90 a month in 2026.

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C)

A private plan that combines Parts A and B, usually with drug coverage and extras, using a network and a yearly out-of-pocket limit.

  • Medicare Supplement

A standardized policy that pays costs Original Medicare leaves behind and lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare.

  • Part D

Prescription drug coverage from a private plan. Out-of-pocket drug costs are capped at $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027.

  • Help with costs

Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs lower costs for people with limited income.

Florida specifics

What to know before you choose

Last reviewed October 9, 2026.

  • Original Medicare has no yearly limit on the 20% you pay for Part B services. That is the main reason people add a plan.
  • The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, for coverage starting January 1.
  • If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch once between January 1 and March 31.
  • In Florida, moving from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement later usually requires health underwriting. Florida has no birthday rule.
  • You have a six-month window to buy a Medicare Supplement with no health questions, starting when your Part B begins at 65.
  • Late enrollment penalties are permanent: 10% for each year you delay Part B, and 1% a month for Part D without other creditable coverage.
  • COBRA and retiree coverage do not let you delay Part B without a penalty.
  • Plans change every year. Your plan sends an Annual Notice of Change each September.

Common questions

Medicare questions.

When do I sign up for Medicare?

Your Initial Enrollment Period is the seven months around the month you turn 65. If you are still covered by an employer plan through active work, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty.

Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement?

Advantage plans usually have low premiums, a network and copays as you use care. Supplements have a monthly premium, no network and predictable costs. The right choice depends on your doctors, health and budget.

Can I switch from Advantage to a Supplement later?

In Florida you usually have to pass health underwriting to do so, outside a few protected situations. That is why the first choice deserves care.

How can a plan have a $0 premium?

Medicare pays the plan to provide your benefits. You still pay your Part B premium, and copays when you use care, up to the plan's yearly limit.

What are the late penalties?

Part B adds 10% to your premium for each full year you delayed without other qualifying coverage. Part D adds 1% of the national base premium for each month without creditable drug coverage. Both last as long as you have the coverage.

Does Medicare cover dental, vision and hearing?

Original Medicare generally does not. Many Medicare Advantage plans include some of these benefits.

Does Medicare cover me abroad?

Usually not. Some Medicare Supplement plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage.

Does it cost anything to work with you?

No. We are paid by the insurers whose plans we represent.
