Health insurance in Brandon, FL

Individual and family health insurance pays for doctor visits, hospital care and prescriptions, and limits what you can owe in a year. In Florida these plans are bought through HealthCare.gov, and the price you pay depends on your income and the plans sold in your ZIP code.

What it covers

What health insurance includes.

  • Marketplace plans

Bronze, Silver and Gold plans that cover the same essential benefits and differ in how costs are shared.

  • Pre-existing conditions

Marketplace plans cannot refuse you or charge more because of your health.

  • Premium tax credits

Monthly savings for households with income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.

  • Short-term medical

Temporary coverage for a gap between plans. It is not the same as a Marketplace plan and can exclude pre-existing conditions.

  • Dental and vision

Adult dental and vision are not part of Marketplace health plans and are bought separately.

  • Supplemental plans

Accident, critical illness and hospital plans that pay a set amount alongside your main coverage.

Florida specifics

What changed for 2026 and 2027

Last reviewed October 9, 2026.

  • Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts on January 1.
  • The extra premium subsidies ended on December 31, 2025. Households above 400% of the federal poverty level no longer receive a tax credit.
  • For 2027 coverage, 400% of the poverty level is $63,840 for one person and $132,000 for a family of four.
  • If your income ends the year higher than you estimated, the excess tax credit must be repaid in full. Careful income estimating matters more than before.
  • Several insurers have left or are leaving Florida's Marketplace. If your plan is ending, you will need to choose a new one during open enrollment.
  • Florida has not expanded Medicaid, so some adults with income below the poverty level qualify for neither Medicaid nor a tax credit. We can talk through the options.
  • Outside open enrollment you can enroll within 60 days of a qualifying event such as losing other coverage, marriage, a birth or a move.

How we help

What you get from a local independent agency.

  • We compare the plans actually sold in your ZIP code and check your doctors and prescriptions against each network.
  • We help you estimate income so your tax credit is right and you avoid a repayment.
  • We explain the difference between Marketplace plans and short-term coverage before you buy.
  • We help all year with income changes, billing questions and life events.
  • Insurers pay us. Your premium is the same with or without an agent.

Short-term and supplemental plans are not Marketplace plans, do not qualify for premium tax credits and may not cover all essential health benefits.

Common questions

Health insurance questions.

Do I still qualify for a subsidy?

You may, if your household income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level and you are not offered affordable employer coverage. Above 400% there is no tax credit for 2026 or 2027.

When is the deadline to enroll?

Open enrollment for 2027 runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 if you want coverage from January 1.

What if my income changes during the year?

Report it promptly so your tax credit is adjusted. Any excess credit paid during the year has to be repaid when you file your taxes.

Can I be turned down for a pre-existing condition?

Not for a Marketplace plan. Short-term plans are different: they can decline applicants and exclude pre-existing conditions.

Which plan level should I choose?

It depends on how much care you expect to use. Bronze plans have lower premiums and higher costs when you need care. Silver plans can include extra savings for lower incomes. We will walk through the numbers.

I lost my job. Can I enroll now?

Yes. Losing other coverage is a qualifying event that gives you 60 days to enroll outside open enrollment.

Does it cost anything to use an agent?

No. Agents are paid by the insurers, and plan prices are the same whether or not you use one.

My plan is being discontinued. What happens?

You will need to choose another plan during open enrollment. We can compare the remaining options and check your doctors against them.
