Florida car insurance minimums: what $10,000 of PIP leaves out

The coverage you need to register a car in Florida does not pay for injuries you cause to anyone else.

What Florida requires

To register a vehicle with four or more wheels in Florida you need two coverages: $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability. Florida remains a no-fault state. Bills to repeal the no-fault law were filed in 2025 and 2026 and did not pass.

What PIP pays

PIP pays 80% of your medical bills and 60% of lost wages up to $10,000, whoever caused the crash. It pays medical bills only if you get treatment within 14 days.

A single emergency room visit can use most of that limit. PIP was designed to pay quickly, not to pay everything.

What the minimum leaves out

A driver who carries only the legal minimum has no coverage for three of the most expensive outcomes of a crash.

  • Injuries you cause to other people. That is bodily injury liability, which is optional at registration.
  • Your own injuries when the other driver has no injury coverage. That is uninsured motorist coverage.
  • Damage to your own car. That is collision and comprehensive.

Why uninsured motorist coverage matters here

About one in five Florida drivers (20.6%) has no insurance, and many more carry only the minimum, which includes nothing for your injuries. Uninsured motorist coverage pays your medical costs and lost income when the driver at fault cannot.

Stacked coverage multiplies your limit by the number of vehicles on the policy and follows you into any vehicle. Non-stacked coverage gives one limit and costs less. Ask to see the price of each.

Keep the policy in force

Coverage must stay active for as long as the car has a Florida plate, even if you are not driving it. A lapse can suspend your license and registration, with a reinstatement fee of $150 to $500. Surrender the plate before you cancel a policy on a car you no longer use.
