Medicare annual enrollment: a checklist for October 15 to December 7

Plans change their benefits and networks every year. Five things to check before December 7.

What the enrollment period is for

The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, for coverage starting January 1. It is the time to change a Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plan, or to confirm that your current plan still fits.

Five things to check

Your plan sends an Annual Notice of Change each September. Start there.

  • Read the Annual Notice of Change for new premiums, copays and benefits.
  • Confirm your doctors and hospital are still in the network.
  • Check that each prescription is still covered and at what cost.
  • Compare the yearly out-of-pocket limit with other plans in your county.
  • Ask whether you may qualify for Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program.

Costs that change

The standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month in 2026. Out-of-pocket costs for Part D prescription drugs are capped at $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027.

A Florida point worth knowing

In Florida, moving from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement later usually requires health underwriting, and Florida has no birthday rule. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can also switch once between January 1 and March 31.
